Edgar W. Clark fought in 13 of the most famous battles of the Civil War for the 3rd Michigan Infantry Regiment. Over 40 days of combat, he survived the battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Spotsylvania and Petersburg. He was shot in the left knee at Petersburg and survived amputation and gangrene. Thanks to 181 letters sent home to his wife, Catherine, in Lansing, Mich., his great-great-grandson, Michael P. Clark, takes us on Edgar’s journey, including commentary on the military, political and social issues of the time. WEB PHOTO: Monument to 3rd Michigan in Peach Orchard at Gettysburg. We review the major experiences of Private Edgar W. Clark during his nearly three years of service in the Army of the Potomac. Make no mistake, thousands of citizen soldiers like Edgar won the Civil War and saved the Union for freedom. We end this episode with a stirring rendition of "Battle Hymn of the Republic" by the Michigan State University School of Music -- 300 singers and 300 members of the Spartan Marching Band.
