Edgar W. Clark fought in 13 of the most famous battles of the Civil War for the 3rd Michigan Infantry Regiment. Over 40 days of combat, he survived the battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Spotsylvania and Petersburg. He was shot in the left knee at Petersburg and survived amputation and gangrene. Thanks to 181 letters sent home to his wife, Catherine, in Lansing, Mich., his great-great-grandson, Michael P. Clark, takes us on Edgar’s journey, including commentary on the military, political and social issues of the time. WEB PHOTO: Monument to 3rd Michigan in Peach Orchard at Gettysburg. Just one month after the disaster at Chancellorsville, Edgar W. Clark was in the middle of another controversial incident at Gettysburg. He was sent to the point of the Peach Orchard to support artillery, far ahead of the Union heights on Cemetery Ridge. Gen. Daniel Sickles did it again. After the Gettysburg battle ended, Edgar delivered water to wounded troops. For more info on this project, see the website: civilwarsurvivor.com.
