Edgar W. Clark fought in 13 of the most famous battles of the Civil War for the 3rd Michigan Infantry Regiment. Over 40 days of combat, he survived the battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Spotsylvania and Petersburg. He was shot in the left knee at Petersburg and survived amputation and gangrene. Thanks to 181 letters sent home to his wife, Catherine, in Lansing, Mich., his great-great-grandson, Michael P. Clark, takes us on Edgar’s journey, including commentary on the military, political and social issues of the time. WEB PHOTO: Monument to 3rd Michigan in Peach Orchard at Gettysburg.
