Edgar W. Clark fought in 13 of the most famous battles of the Civil War for the 3rd Michigan Infantry Regiment. Over 40 days of combat, he survived the battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Spotsylvania and Petersburg. He was shot in the left knee at Petersburg and survived amputation and gangrene. Thanks to 181 letters sent home to his wife, Catherine, in Lansing, Mich., his great-great-grandson, Michael P. One of the most interesting and important characters in America's Civil War history is Henry Clay of Kentucky. Like Thomas Jefferson, he made antislavery statements and yet enslaved many people. Clay also was instrumental in developing compromises between slave states and anti-slave states. Though the compromises eventually had to fail -- there is no compromise on freedom -- the delays made possible the presidency of Abraham Lincoln.
