Edgar W. Clark fought in 13 of the most famous battles of the Civil War for the 3rd Michigan Infantry Regiment. Over 40 days of combat, he survived the battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Spotsylvania and Petersburg. He was shot in the left knee at Petersburg and survived amputation and gangrene. Thanks to 181 letters sent home to his wife, Catherine, in Lansing, Mich., his great-great-grandson, Michael P. Clark, takes us on Edgar’s journey, including commentary on the military, political and social issues of the time. WEB PHOTO: Monument to 3rd Michigan in Peach Orchard at Gettysburg. When I discovered that a female nurse, basically acting like a medic, heroically called Union troops forward at Chancellorsville for the 3rd Michigan Infantry Regiment, I realized there was an interesting tale. The story of women who fought as men in combat units in the Civil War had only been superficially examined in modern times. But DeAnne Blanton and Lauren Cook did a masterful job of getting to the bottom in their groundbreaking book, "They Fought Like Demons: Women Soldiers in the American Civil War." What follows is my interview with Blaton.
